Melanotan I Peptide Research
Melanotan I (afamelanotide) is a synthetic linear analog of alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH) studied for its selective activation of the MC1R melanocortin receptor, which regulates melanogenesis and skin pigmentation. Unlike Melanotan II, it has minimal activity at MC3R and MC4R, reducing its effects on appetite and sexual function. Research has focused on its applications in erythropoietic protoporphyria — for which it has received regulatory approval in some jurisdictions — as well as photoprotection, vitiligo, and polymorphous light eruption. This section covers scientific studies on Melanotan I and its melanocortin system and photoprotection peptide research applications.
